Doctor Who? I Learned Something From TV.

In the last few days I’ve been catching up to the BBC series, Doctor Who. Now I know not everyone knows who that is, but I’m assuming you will if you’re on this site. I mean, its kind of geared towards everyone, but I am geek-centric. Anyway, I won’t go into the premise of the show, but the reason why I wanted to talk about it is just kind of a look at how I think people view their lives, and probably why I like this series so much. But before I lose you, read a little bit further, there’s a reason to all this.
I’ve only watched the later series, thed 2005 and on, just caught up to see the 11th Doctor, but that’s not the point. besides all the sci fi and the fantastical stuff, there’s this odd underlying message that always seems to pop up on the show. The Doctor continously finds people and their potential. Now, maybe I’m not watching enough Tv, which I don’t because there’s just too much of it, but I don’t think American television even remotely talks about the potential of people.
Each episode is like a testiment to the human spirit. That anyone, big and small can make a difference in their own life and the lives of others. I don’t know about other people who watch the show, but I’m inspired…or I want to watch more. I mean, I love the characters, the ideas of a man who goes about saving the world without ever expecting anything in return. I mean, I dreamt up a character like that when I was a kid. Before I knew there was anything like Doctor Who and the like. Now, to see an actual tv character actualized like that, is amazing.
I bring this up because, I think people really lose sight of themselves and the world. They need little reminders that they’re actually special and worth something. People who feel that their job keeps them from being anything big, constantly doing the daily grind, thinking they’re not making a difference. But we do, maybe not to everyone, but we do at one point or another. You touch someone’s life in some way, shape or form, doing something that opens their eyes to something bigger. Maybe you simply make their day by being kind, or being sharing a bit of knowledge.
We forget that we are constantly interacting with people on a day in, day out basis. And this all leads back to Doctor Who. The characters there, they make a choice to do something for someone, something positive, and ni the grand scheme of the show, it changes a lot. But there’s not that much different from that show and the real world. It may not be as big an impact, and we may not see the end results of what we do. But the fact that we go out there and do it, and actually try to make a difference in our own lives and the lives of others, by helping them, being open, being positive, being kind.
And its sad, that people can go day in and day out and do nothing. Hell, I’m a victim of that. I stay home and go about my business, doing what makes me happy. But when someone needs something, when someone needs help, I’m there. I drop things, and I help them as much as I can. I may not like it all the time, but I want to do it. I’m no saint, and I don’t expect much in return, I just…try to be of some help. Help make someone’s life a little bit better.
Anyway, I think I’ve made my point. If you haven’t watched Doctor Who, its an entertaining show with likeable characters and moments of suspended disbelief. Either way, I think you’ll enjoy it, and I think you’ll have fun. That’s all.
