On a day like today, those who are single are hating it and those who are in a relationship are hating it more. We are reminded of how we “need” to be in relationships and at the same time how expensive it is to maintain a relationship in general. But the negative aside, the day all boils down to a feeling, an emotion, a concept. Love. You don’t need a girlfriend or a boyfriend or a marriage to know what love feels like. You have family and friends, pets, and even the material things. So today, on a day that I’ve mentioned can be depressing, let’s celebrate whatever situation we’re in and the love that we are capable of giving and receiving.
You don’t need a significant other to give a card or a gift. Show your appreciation to the people in your life that have helped you and have been by your side through good times and bad. And despite the fact that some people find this day as a day of coporate propaganda and the only purpose is to sell cards and candy, it shouldn’t matter. You’re not celebrating a feeling that almost everyone is capable of feeling. You’re raising a glass to love, affection, devotion, and a partnership. All of which can be seen in your parents, your close friends, even your cat.
So go out there, grab some candy and cards and show your appreciation. Let the people who are in your life know how important they are to you and the impact they have in your life. They’ll appreciate it. And if you’re in a relationship, remember, if she or he needs expensive, extravagant gifts from you to be happy, then they may not be in love with you after all. So assess what you’re doing, don’t go overboard, and show your love in the way you show it, not in what’s expected of you. If they really care about you, that’ll definitely be enough.
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Share the love.
