I have a fantastic laptop from Alienware. It’s a nice little 11 in. laptop made for gaming and it’s even got a cool little hybrid hard drive that I installed with it’s own little Solid State Drive. And okay, for many this is a boring train of thought, but the idea of PC vs. Mac, Apple vs. Windows, is something most people can relate to and the fight still rages on.
You’ve seen the commercials in the past ,with “I’m a PC I’m a Mac”, where there’s a little battle of the words between Justin Long and some Bill Gates looking guy. Then there are those less memorable ones that Microsoft shows off that say “I’m a PC.” I guess that’s convincing enough to let people know which is better. But the debate still rages on, where the fanbois and gals duke it out with which is better. For the average person, they’ll pick the Windows platform hands down. Everyone knows it, is familiar with it, and every freakin’ cheap PC is loaded with it. People know what it is and feel comfortable in that world. The Mac has it’s own little universe with it’s own loyal fanbase and well…has the ultimate fanpeeps.
Then I read this blog post and saw the subsequent xkcd comic, well, before I read the blog post, and I kind of did a facepalm. Of course! The computer doesn’t matter, the OS doesn’t matter, because we don’t use the computer for what it was originally meant for! We simply use the browser! And of course Zack Whittaker was right and that the environment doesn’t really matter because the majority of our use of the computer is on the web, and on Chrome or Firefox. I can’t remember the last time I’ve used a program that DIDN’T exist on both platforms, and so why the hell am I having this dilemma?
Because I realized, that there IS a difference between the Mac and the PC. I don’t care if the browser is where it’s at, because I still have programs that crash and sluggishness and complexities that I can’t always address on my laptop. Windows, for all the years I’ve used it, which I think is coming up on 15 years…wow, I’m old…the Windows environment has always felt haphazard and chaotic. Of course, I haven’t had much experience with Mac, so maybe it’s just as bad, but if it’s anything like it’s iPad, which I do own…then I kind of prefer that. It’s clean, simple (though I’m not opposed to the intracicies of the Windows platform), and it just works. The hardware is fantastic, durable, looks and feels expensive. For Windows, I don’t know, it’s just unnecessarily complicated, the hardware it’s in feels not as great? (I’m trying to be nice and not say cheap.)
Here’s the problem. I KNOW the Windows platform. It’s like an old friend whom I’ve spent so much time with, I know what makes it mad, and I know what makes it happy. The Mac is like a brand new world, a new person, where I’m shy and I have no idea what makes it tick. But they look more put together, nicer, and “sexier”. I’m attracted to it even though I don’t know why. So what do I do? Do I stick with the tride and true or try something new and mysterious or should I just go with this guy over here — gt; Ubuntu. Well, if you don’t know Ubuntu, don’t worry about it, just help me? I’d love to hear your advice, and what you think.
One last note…I bring this all up because my screen is cracked and only getting worse, and as far as I know there’s no way to fix or replace that…so I may be screwed…
