Two days ago, there was a preview for a show that starred a man who played a Musketeer, a vampire, a cowboy, and a CTU agent. There were probably more, but those were the ones that I had off the top of my head. Keifer Sutherland stars in the show Touch. First off, I get why they call the show “Touch”, but I still think it’s an awful name for a drama like this. Makes me think of either a Tablet or porn, so there’s that. Either way, I was compelled to watch this show because I’m a huge fan of Keifer Sutherland, mostly because of 24 . I loved that entire series, except for the last ten minutes, but I could rant for days about that.
Touch is a show about a child who has autism, but thanks to Danny Glover, who, despite his disheveled appearance and shoddy living arrangements, the father of the child, Martin Bohm, played by Keifer, is convinced it’s more. The child has this uncanny ability with numbers, and he loves technology and he apparently sees patterns in the world around us. It’s very much like “A Beautiful Mind” and movies to that affect, where the numbers tell the story. Eventually the numbers lead to people meeting each other, seeming random events become connected, and Martin Bohm begins his journey as a hero.
Honestly, I think I would have liked the show even if it sucked because again, it has Jack Bauer in it. So as the first half hour begins to lose my interest, they whip me into shape with some amazing writing and story telling. The way they connected the lives of the people in this show just threw me for a loop. I won’t ruin it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet or is waiting for the March premiere, which is a pretty sly move on the network for giving us a taste and then taking it away like that. Still, you watch this show, you quickly get emotionally involved with even the characters who are on screen for 30 seconds and you root for practically everyone. I found myself at times already freaking caring about for someone I barely saw for two seconds the scene before. That’s a good sign.
I’m no professional critic, I watch only a few shows and they’re not all fantastic. I know I still have to watch Breaking Bad and the like, that people keep telling me are so great. But in all honesty, I don’t have the time. I pick and choose what I watch. Sure that includes reruns of the most recent Doctor Who, but can you blame me? This show has definitely got my attention with great characters, a fascinating story line and Keifer Sutherland.
Now, you may be anticipating the bad part of the review, because well, there’s something bad in everything, even the things you really like. In this show, I think I’m just tired of kids driving the show. I watch “Once Upon a Time“, and that little kid is annoying. Now, I realize the kid is intentionally like this due to the Autism he is portraying, and he is very convincing, though as a person who’s never known anyone with autism, I have nothing to base that from, the kid still kind of rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it’s the fact that I wouldn’t know how to handle myself if I was around someone with autism, and that’s a big deal. The show actually, somehow, projects that message, and that’s some powerful stuff. I’m just claiming ignorance on that part. Otherwise, I have little bad to say about this show, mostly because I don’t concentrate on the bad I only really like to really pay attention to what makes something good, which probably makes me annoying.
“Touch” is an awesome show, and hopefully they have it out there for you to watch if you missed the sneak preview. I think it’s worth your time, and investment. What will suck for me is that I know I won’t be able to catch it every time it’s on and I’m going to have to rely on Hulu, which means I won’t been seeing it for another 8 days after it’s been out. That’s the bad, and I hate that, but I will endure because there is so much promise for this show. With my luck, halfway through the season it will start sucking or get cancelled after 20 episodes. I’m bad at picking shows. I really liked “No Ordinary Family” “Outsourced” and where are they now? Gone…
I’m giving the first episode of “Touch” 4 out of 5 mechanoreceptors. You better not suck later on “Touch”!!!!
