I didn’t anticipate getting sick this weekend. I am powering through with grace and avoiding people as I cough and wheeze through the convention. So I will give you a brief recap of what I’ve sat in so far this morning, and what my plans are for this afternoon.
With a late start to the morning, I pretty much missed out on the Geek Fashion panel, which I found pretty interesting in the end. It was a way to show your nerdiness in your clothing without having to be too blatant about it. I learned a couple of things, and I appreciate that the panel was also geared towards men as well, as fashion does have a tendency to be more female oriented.
The Troma panel was next and Lloyd Kaufman was probably the most entertaining panelist I’ve seen in a long time. He’s personable, candid, and very open about his line of work, his passion for movies, and his interest in those controversial topics, people are afraid to talk about. I can see why Dave the Drummer likes him so much. Unfortunately, I was unable to talk to him after the panel as he was rushed out and we were ushered out of the room to make way for the next panel.
In an attempt to make up for missing the Geek Fashion panel, I was determined to make it to the fashionably nerdy panel. I was adamant to look good. As good as the panel was, there was an emphasis on women’s wardrobe over men, which makes sense. Guys have graphic T’s, while women have dresses, skirts, tops, bags, accessories, and the list goes on. Entertaining and informative, I left a little empty handed, and a little light headed.
This is the part I hate writing about, because I’m not proud of it. My sickness had come to a head and I knew I needed a break, even though I spent the morning sitting in panels. I spent a couple hours fighting off a hacking cough, a little vertigo, and what felt like a fever. I’m fairly certain I’m being a baby, and women may be nodding their head in agreement. But I mustered energy, and fought my way to the Hollywood Babble-on line, where I was blessed with a nice relaxing wait. Still, you know those convention sicknesses you hear about? I bet I didn’t help with that.
What was marked as Hollywood Babble-On was really, Fatman on Batman, with Ralph Garman and Kevin Smith. It was their usual banter and cursing that we as fans love, ushering in the news that the original Batman TV series was being released on Blu-ray and DVD. That was all fine and good, and who would attend, but none other than Burt Ward. He was kind enough to give us stories of his time on Batman, his experiences with Martial Arts as well as his friendship to Bruce Lee. There were anecdotes on his injuries, stuntmen, and Adam West’s (who was out sick for this convention) sense of humor and love of poking fun at Burt. A lot of laughs, and a little chaos in the end when Kevin Smith decided to allow one person on stage, so that he could sign a comic book. A flood ensued, and I was out of there for something to eat.
Did I mention that this Convention Center has restaurants everywhere? Still not feeling well, I debate on leaving early. I mean, I still have an hour drive home at 3pm. I haven’t even had a chance to hit the showroom floor since yesterday or take pictures with cosplayers. I have things to do! So that’s where I am now. Currently sitting in what has now become a line for a panel called the “Super Single Geeks”. Weirdly enough, this seems right up my alley.
