Day 36 – Christmas Comes 40 Days Early?

It’s only been a week since Halloween, and the decorations are in the stores, the music is on our radios, and the Santas are sitting idly by in their made up homes in the mall. Personally, I love the holiday season. I get that Christmas spirit going with some Rent soundtrack, some egg nog lattes, and some decorations at my cube, now…office, which is weird. But I normally prepare for this stuff after Thanksgiving, and apparently, the American consumer isn’t allowed to wait that long.

Maybe I’m a grinch this holiday season, but I really think this is getting out of hand. Soon we’ll be preparing for Christmas on the 26th of December, and just use the year as one long celebration. I wish I was joking, but you can see it, can’t you? We’ve started our celebration and preparations 40 days before Christmas! A whole month and change before the ACTUAL day! Am I the only one bothered by this?

I realize as we get older, time flies by faster. Our brain processes information and memories differently and the years go by a little quicker. Anyway, that’s beside the point. Why are we as a society pushing our lives along even faster? Are we so in a hurry, we don’t have time to celebrate Halloween or Thanksgiving? Does the idea of having two almost identical meals in the span of 30 days excite us? What’s going on?

Alas, I am not anti Christmas nor anti Holidays. I do love this time of year. I just wish we didn’t celebrate it so soon. Let other holidays breathe. There’ll be plenty of time for buying gifts, kissing under mistletoe and singing carols. For now, I’ll just go along with this celebrating early business with a song you all know and love from the Ark Music Factory. Let’s celebrate Thanksgiving!
