The whispers throughout the internet and mainstream media say that the youth of today only want one thing. They want to be famous. This makes sense if you look at the plethora of Youtube “stars” who came up and became pseudo celebrities. There are these type of folk on Instagram, Twitter, Vine, you name it. The young and the old alike want to be liked by the masses. Hell, I’d be lying if I didn’t say I wouldn’t mind some fame because of my podcasts or this blog. I do these things not only because I love to do it, but because it reaches out to people.
I don’t know if it’s sad that people want to be internet famous. People all over the world are willing to watch others play video games for hours on end on Twitch or read blog posts or use Youtube as a TV for the latest shows and reviews. What we old fogies believe is a waste of time is actually the way we entertain each other. The internet is the new sidewalk and we are the street performers. We make a living not on dollar bills, but on views and listens. That’s the new currency that turns into real currency.
Where I once had a bad taste in my mouth for those “weirdos” who flaunted themselves online with obnoxious persona’s or stupid songs, I now have a renewed respect, because someone is consuming their content. Someone is buying their song, downloading their video, and donating to their website, and for those fans, that person they support, is a star.
