Life is sweet agony: A Story of the Heart in a Heartless World. Part 1:

Okay, so…I’m not used to writing in this format, in this genre. I normally write sci-fi fantasy. Let me know what you think of this. Its just an attempt to see how I feel about writing in this genre of writing. I want to do a series of stories based on relationships because I enjoy writing. Its all fiction, for the most part, taken from the lives of possibly myself or others. Busting out a short story or a continuous story every two weeks. But if I suck at writing, I’ll just keep it to myself. Haha.

Tom sat there trying to listen to the professor lecture on about how psychology is applied in our every day interactions. It was fascinating for sure, but he was distracted. It wasn’t hard to be distracted when you sat beside a bunch of college girls with their smile and their hair and their cleavage. It was harder still for a college senior to pay attention when one in particular sat right in front of him.

All he could see was the back of her head, but it was a pretty head of hair. Dark brown, with hints of blonde. Even from where he sat he could smell the soft fragrance of her fruit scented shampoo. It wasn’t that he was creepy, and it wasn’t like he was trying to smell her hair, it just happened to work out that way.

Then he noticed the murmuring in the room. People began standing and walking about to the different desks. Was it a break? Tom looked around, wondering what the hell was going on when a girl from behind him came up to him and smiled. Her eyes were a brilliant green, and he was almost taken aback. Where did she come from?

ldquo;Want to be my partner? rdquo; she asked. Tom, was still confused, and absorbing the fact that a woman came up to him willingly and was talking with him. He was definitely missing something.

ldquo;Wait, what? rdquo;

ldquo;My partner, for the project. Do you want to be my partner? rdquo; she laughed. Tom looked around, and people were talking among themselves, laughing, preparing for whatever was just assigned. Well, now it was all coming together. He looked back at the girl who was waiting in mock anticipation.

She was cute for sure, but maybe he just looked like he knew what he was doing. That had to be the reason. He smiled and said, ldquo;Yeah, of course. So what are we doing again? rdquo;

And they talked, causing the last two hours of class just melt away.

ldquo;So, is she hot? rdquo;

ldquo;What? rdquo; Tom asked, incredulous. Chris sat across from him, the chessboard momentarily forgotten. Tom wasn’t trying to suggest anything, other than he found it weird that she went up to him, wanted to talk to him, and wanted to be his partner. He only brought it up to make conversation with his long time friend. ldquo;Yeah, she’s cute. Why does it matter? rdquo;

ldquo;Dude, of course it matters. She’s into you. Can’t you tell? rdquo;

ldquo;How the hell am I supposed to tell, she just talked to me and asked me to be her partner. Am I supposed to just think that’s some trick to get me to go out with her? rdquo;

ldquo;Does she need to trick you to get you to go out with her? rdquo;

ldquo;No! That’s not the point, rdquo; Tom sighed, and moved his bishop. ldquo;I’m not just going to assume some girl has the hots for me just because she asked me to be her partner. rdquo;

ldquo;You’re an idiot Tom, she likes you. Just go fuck this girl already and get it over with. rdquo; Chris moved his rook, putting Tom in check.

ldquo;I’m not…just because you can do it so easily doesn’t mean I can. Besides, I think you got it all wrong. rdquo; Tom mindlessly moved the pawn to block the rook.

ldquo;She was flirting with you right? rdquo; Chris took the pawn with his queen. Tom was losing, and it was all because of this guy and his conversation. Why did Tom have to bring it up anyway? They normally talked video games, and Chris’ latest conquests or complaints with his girlfriend. It was rarely about Tom, but the moment he mentioned ldquo;Sarah, rdquo; that was her name, Chris got interested.

ldquo;How the hell do I know? She was asking about me. We talked more about ourselves than the assignment I guess. rdquo; Tom, moved his knight to take the queen and block Chris’ advance with his rook. This game was getting ridiculous.

ldquo;See, this is why you don’t get laid. The moment a chick has any interest in you, you play dumb and walk away. Check mate. rdquo; There it was, the move Tom didn’t see. ldquo;Get some balls Tom, you won’t know unless you ask her out. rdquo;

ldquo;Why does it matter if I get laid? I’ve had plenty of women… rdquo; Tom stopped resetting the pieces to look up and see the smirk on Chris’ face. ldquo;Yes, they were all from the internet, but… rdquo;

ldquo;You wouldn’t know what to do with a real one if she offered herself naked shaking her tits in your face. rdquo;

“They were real women! Look, I…what if she says no? rdquo;

“Yeah, she’d probably say no. Look at you, rdquo; said Chris, laughing. It was a familiar joke, but one that had more weight now for some reason.

Let’s just get back to the game. rdquo; Tom sank into his chair wondering why the conversation bothered him so much.

ldquo;Fine, you can go first. rdquo;

The rain drummed on the hood of his car as he waited outside the small restaurant. He was early, and maybe a little too early, but they were supposed to meet. He felt anxious for some reason. Maybe Chris was right. He’d never really encountered a girl in the flesh who was interested in him. He’d never even considered it.

He saw her walk passed his car, her short black hair, soaked from the rain. Steeling himself, he opened the door and followed her in. Sarah turned, and smiled as their eyes met. She gave him a hug, and he sank into it gladly. ldquo;Hi! How are you? rdquo; Tom smiled brightly and they talked, for hours.

It was so strange to actually talk and interact with a woman who wasn’t text most of the time. He met those people on the internet, they were real to him, but then after a weekend of fun they’d go back to their respective homes in some other state or far away city. Sarah, would see him in class the next day and the next week. There was no way she was interested in him. They’ve only really talked twice. He was just a big nerd. He didn’t even think she got most of his jokes and just laughed out of being polite.

ldquo;So do you want to…have lunch, or coffee some time? rdquo; she asked him, almost shyly. Tom could only blink at her. ldquo;Well? rdquo; she laughed.

ldquo;Yeah. That’d be great. rdquo;

ldquo;Its a date then. rdquo; She gave him another hug and left him there wondering what just happened.

-to be continued? Or maybe I should just stick to my genre…
