Day 21 – Ready for Comikaze

The biggest worry I had all month, was whether or not I would have the appropriate equipment for this week’s Comikaze. Everything is so expensive, from recording devices to video cameras. I was afraid I’d break the bank, or go broke, which I think are the same thing. Then I found the iRig Mic.

This is not an advertisement, because I honestly don’t know if this device is good or bad. I could be singing its praises by Monday of next week or damning it for being a piece of junk. I mean, technically, I’m taking a huge risk. You should see some of the reviews for this thing. But, it’s a nice little alternative to buying a video camera and a recording device and a person to work both. Here’s the website if you want to learn more (http://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigmic/).

From the twenty minutes I’ve played with the iRig Mic, it seems pretty cool and useful. It connects to your phone via the headphone jack and let’s you record audio whilst also taking video. So technically, the audio should be crystal clear. Of course I tested this in a quiet room, so maybe a noisy convention will drown me out, but I’m certain it’s better than the built in mic. It also makes me look hella professional. I hope people still use the world hella… There are three settings on this mic for up close, distant, and I think the middle ground use. I intend to use it up close, but it’s nice to have choices.

It’s probably going to look really weird if I’m recording video with my outstretched arm while talking to folk. As a matter of fact, it will probably look stupid. Therefore, I decided to look really dumb, and purchase a selfie stick. That’s right party people, I’ll be using that stick you see tourists use to take those amazing selfies. Instead, I’ll be using it to record video, talk to people on the show floor, and have it far enough away so it doesn’t look like my cheek is doing all the talking.

This may not be the best of solutions, but I couldn’t justify the cost of gadgets that would need more than myself to use. I’m going alone on this trip as Press, and though I may have a friend tag along, they might not have access to things I would. Again, never been Press before. I also figured I’d throw it out there for anyone else going to a convention and looking for a nice and convenient way of recording audio, video, and not spending a ton of money. I’ll let you know if it was even worth the $70 for selfie stick and iRig Mic, next week. Wish me luck!
