Wondercon – Day 2

The second day is when the real fun begins, because now the convention gets crowded, the cosplay get’s turned up a notch, and the panels get real. But Wondercon wouldn’t be Wondercon without a bump or two in the road. For one such bump, which actually didn’t happen to me, but to some fellow attendees upon arrival to the Anaheim Convention Center, I take you to the third level of the parking garage. Now, normally I wouldn’t write about this, but I found it fascinating.

Now, I realize I’m biased, because I know Shelley, and she volunteers at the convention. So I’m fully aware that my sympathy lies with the people who are simply doing their job at a big and complicated event. So needless to say, I found it funny when some exhibitors and attendees started harassing the staff because they wouldn’t be let in. Now, remember, we’re on the third floor of a parking garage that has a bridge that leads into the Convention Center. The staff barring our way in were told by their supervisors, that no one could enter from this floor until opening hours, which was still half an hour away.

The people standing there were not happy, and would not take no for an answer. It wasn’t like the staff were impolite. As a matter of fact, I thought they were downright pleasant, but stern. They were given instructions and they were just doing their job. The folk who were arguing with the staff were understandably upset, but then they were getting obnoxious and entitled and it was upsetting to see. Mostly because I’m not a fan of conflict.

I stood there for a good minute before I decided I’d just go downstairs and try my luck. Interestingly enough, the staff on the first floor were more than happy to let me in to the Convention Center. I know there’s a Wizard’s Rule somewhere saying that you should find a solution instead of dwelling on the problem. Anyway, I found that whole scenario interesting.

Today was a nerve racking day. If you’ve never been press for an event like this, you don’t know what to expect. For myself, I had a few panels to sit in before I would try to make my way to some round table interviews that I neglected to RSVP for, on time. Yeah, I’m an idiot and waited too long, and I did end up paying for it.

But first, cosplay. I did NOT take any pictures. If you’re reading this, you deserve to see high quality HD pictures, not some dinky phone photos. So, I sadly have to leave you to your own devices if you want to see all the amazing and beautiful cosplay. One day, maybe, I’ll actually get myself a fancy camera and take photos and video right.

Onto the panels. I like telling you about the panels, because you learn so much about your favorie things. For me it was Gotham and iZombie. With iZombie, the cast and producer were there, dishing out information I kind of already knew. The sizzle reel was interesting, but it didn’t grab me like Gotham’s did. It shows Liv continuing to do her brain eating, crime fighting, personality stealing thing, and Blane get’s outed as the main baddie who’s trying to raise a zombie army. A lot of the iZombie panel was about how they’re going to adapt the comic books to the show and how amazing Rose McIver was the Yellow Ranger, and for us Once Upon a Time fans, was Tinkerbell, and the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars influences. It’s a short first season for this CW show, so us fans will just have to be content that it’s just setting itself up for a second season.

In contract, Gotham, is looking awesome. I realize this show is polarizing, because the writing can be shaky, and the acting can feel stilted, but personally, I enjoy the show. And for this Gotham panel we had Ben McKenzie, Robin Lord Taylor, Cory Michael Smith, and I believe one of the writers/producers of the show. So for the most part there was a lot of eye candy for the ladies. Either way, what they revealed was exciting because we only have four more episodes until the first season is over. There was a lot of talk of how far Gordon would go to be a good guy, the rise of the Riddler, and the final confrontation between the Penguin and Fish Moonie. I think the most interesting information was the talk of the Riddler coming into his own as he evolves from Nygma by the end of the season. There wasn’t much beyond that though as there was some OC talk, and Ben getting a moustache, and Bruce Wayne’s turn to the Dark Knight.

Television was the king of my convention as I sat in on the Orphan Black panel, where I learned that there are “Clones-bians”. Practically the entire cast was there, minus the lovely and talented Tatiana Maslaney, as they teased us all for the next season. Apparently there will be more of the creepy Caster Clones as they execute some diabolical plan being orchestrated by Paul. We learn that Delphine will take on a new roll in the show while her love, Cosima, continues to battle the illness that plagues the clones. Donnie and Alison continue to be a crazy suburban couple, and we discover the horrible fate of Helena at the hands of the enemy. Wow, this is hard to not spoil. I think my only complaint about this panel were the three girls behind me who kept saying how cute one actor was, and how awesome another was, and I just wanted to yell at them to shut uppity up up up! At least I got some cool pins from the panel, which is nice.

I spent the rest of the panel walking the floor, planning convention things with Shelley, and seeing and saying hello to the many celebrities who braved the booths. These folk were the nicest, most patient people you will ever meet. The cast of iZombie were there, the Honest Trailer people were about, some IGN personalities were making the rounds, and they all looked like they loved their fans. It was so cool to see.

What may not be a Wondercon necessity was how I ended my night. I found myself once again at Ten Forward, eating dinner and sharing the day with my co-host, who introduced me to the best food ever, the bacon wrapped dates. Mmmmmmmm. Bacon.
