I survived Wondercon! I made it to Easter Sunday, the last day of the convention, and what a weekend it was. There were laughs, there were cries, there were booty, booty, booty, rocking everywhere. Look, I’m going to have to be creepy and say, there were a lot of exposed butts at Wondercon, both female and male. Still, that did not deter, and in some cases, it enhanced, this final day of pop culture geekery.
My favorite part of day 3 of Wondercon was the laid back nature of the entire Convention Center. People were more bold in their cosplay, as we had fans of all types, gender bending, dancing, and posing provocatively. We even had a Jesus this year, who’s miraculous powers of fountain bending left the audience in awe. But there was more to this day than that, because despite the shorter day, Wondercon was able to pack in a lot of punch.
You don’t need to hear about my escapades of spending hours debating on what lightsaber I was going to buy, or any of the geek merch I was interested in. Oh no! Instead it’s all about how this was, probably, the best day of the convention, full stop. And it all started off with Shelley and her acquaintance with one, Gigi Edgley, of Farscape fame.
After a quick run around the show floor, we found ourselves at the Sci-Fi museum booth, where a happy Gigi Edgley was commiserating with fans. Out of the corner of the actress’s eye, she saw Shelley and recognized her. For those not in the know, Shelley volunteers at conventions and apparently has made a friend or two along the way, just as she did with Gigi. The lovely Australian, with legs that probably reach to said continent, immediately began joking and talking with us, and sharing with us her con experience. After a quick catch up, Gigi was kind enough to offer a brief interview of her current project and even provided some Geek Love advice. So I give a big thank you to Gigi for taking the time to talk into my phone’s camera and let us know what’s going on with her.
From there the day turned into a blur. I believe the only panel I saw that day was the Flash panel with Shelley, and it seemed that Wondercon saved the best for last. Danielle Panabaker, Candice Patton, and Carlos Valdes were in attendance along with one of the producers, and they had so much to show in their sizzle reel. There was a ton to look forward to as the Flash team raced to discover Orson Wells’/Thawne’s true identity. Then there’s the continued cross over episodes with the Arrow and now the Atom, and my favorite bit of news was Caitlin’s inevitable turn to evil, as Killer Frost. This kind of kills any Snowbarry shipping that I was hoping for, but maybe she’ll be a good, evil villain? The real brain bender was that we may see Killer Frost before the season even ends, which would be bonkers. There was more time travelling to look forward to in the next few episodes and possibly some revelations on the Flash Point event. If Flash Point becomes a thing, then that opens the door for anything crazy to happen on The Flash. A very exciting panel, and so much to be actually excited about. The Flash proved to be the breakout comic book tv hit that everyone was hoping it would be.
And that more or less ends Wondercon for me as I exit the Convention Center with new lightsaber in hand and a couple of shirts in my bag. Everything afterward was people watching, as Shelley and I try to recall all the fandoms represented this weekend. The cosplaying Jesus was able to manipulate the waters of Anaheim, and it looked like a lot of people had a good time. Oh, and we were also able to get a brand new episode of Geek Love Radio recorded. Another successful adventure into Wondercon 2015 that was over too soon, but has my mouth watering for the next big pop culture event.
