I really didn’t start to appreciate movies until I was about thirteen years old or so when I saw Jurassic Park for the first time. So when “This Is Spinal Tap” came out, not only was I too young to even watch the movie, but it was really considered before my time. Thanks to the power of the internet and streaming video, I finally got to watch this movie. Of course, I wouldn’t have watched it, if it were not for everyone and their mother telling me how funny it was and how quotable it was. Well, honestly, it was funny, and it was quotable, but the craziest part was…it was nothing I expected.
Under the guise of a “rockumentary”, this movie dove…dived…PLUNGED, head first into the world of Spinal Tap and their pseudo European esque – ness. Okay, I think I’ve used that suffix combo before. Anyway, it’s really the rollercoaster ride that is the life of a rock band, or hair band, or whatever they were called back then. It’s genuinely funny, with jokes that actually still work today. Now I know that’s all vague, because well, this movie needs to be experienced.
Now you’re thinking, “Man, this guy is really hyping up this movie. It must be awesome and hilarious!” Or maybe you’re thinking, “I…am…job”. Whatever you’re thinking, I assure you that it is entertaining, but hell, I’m not going to guess your sense of humor. I know, that’s the bane of my existence. I keep trying to be “safe” with my opinions and whatnot. But I liked it, and the people who recommended this movie to me liked it, and if you like Dave the Drummer’s tastes Blyth’s taste in movies, and for that matter, my sister’s taste in movies…of course, you have no idea who she is, but she’s a laugh a minute…you’ll like this movie. My only suggestion? The dialog is where most of the humor is, so if you can’t stand people talking, then you might not like this movie. Oh, and in the music. Wow, I want to get this soundtrack. I wonder if it’s still available after 17 years? Well, I guess with iTunes, music lasts forever.
