I heard somewhere that each person, in a one of crises, has an obligation to those around them to maintain a external positive outlook and embodiment of action, as despair and sorrow is contagious. And those are counterproductive emotions in a crisis. If anything 2020 is a year of crisis. Is that fake it until you make it outcome theory?
Scarlett Johansson’s character in Her was just a disembodied voice. That didn’t make her character any less important in the story. It didn’t devalue any emotions caused by her character.
